If the other lane is empty we can certainly go there by ourselves. But if the other lane has traffic, which is usual, DIY type of handling can be very dangerous.
The correct way to change lane with traffic, is to signal long enough so the vehicles in the other lane knows what you want to do, so they will talk back to you with their speeds: if they speed up then we may slow down a bit to create a safe gap; or if they slow down (remember they simply won’t stop for us),we can just speed up a bit, create a better gap, and come in after observation checks.
It should feel plenty of communications by signal and speed, and both drivers have some kind of agreement. Without the communications and agreements, the changing lane is DIY and dangerous.
